RECAP - September 2, 2007 - After Maggie collapsed twice last May, Alaska Zoo Board of Directors decided to move Maggie south to a facility when well enough to travel. During the summer the Zoo reported they were assessing various facilities that had expressed an interest in taking Maggie. Two contenders have visited Alaska to date. EARS (Elephants from Africa Rescue Society, California), and PAWS (Performing Animal Welfare Society, California). After assessing Maggie's disposition, EARS has declined to take her. August 28, Bob Barker offered to pay for Maggie's move to PAWS. The Zoo is considering PAWS' offer but in the interim, the Zoo said another facility is coming to Alaska to see if Maggie would be a good candidate for their institution. The Zoo will be updating the public shortly. September 12 - After months of debate, Alaska Zoo Board announced PAWS in California would be Maggie's new home and that an agreement should be finalized within two weeks. September 27 - Alaska Zoo staff returned from a trip to PAWS accompanied by special PAWS trainers. Lampi said they were delighted with the surroundings and staff and were working hard to get Maggie headed south by the end of October. Stay tuned for media updates.
