Maggie's Future
Update - September 14, 2007, Zoo Board chooses PAWS for Maggie
In August 2004, Alaska Zoo rejected four wonderful institutions, including two AZA-accredited zoos and two sanctuaries, which stood ready, willing and able to consider taking Maggie. All four state-of-the-art facilties offered Maggie the following:

• Spacious habitats with room for their elephants to browse and explore in varied terrain

• Access to submerge in water and mud wallow

• Existing female elephant social groups

• Staff experienced in long-distance transport of elephants

• Staff experienced in introduction of new elephants to their existing herds

• Benign training techniques and strong enrichment programs

• Appropriate veterinarian care and sound husbandry practice

• Mild climate year round with outdoor access on a daily basis

All four facilities are prepared to undertake this project at no cost to the Alaska Zoo.
